summer vibes

The other day, Claire was playing in the kids section of the library, and another mom there asked how old she was.

"Three," I said. Then, "Wait, what'd you ask? No. She's 18 months. No she's not. She's almost two. She's one. FINAL ANSWER she's almost two!"

Ha! You guys, I'm losing my mind. Just yesterday I couldn't get my mail key to work. I tried absolutely everything, and I was about to go to the main office to get a new key. Aaaaaand then I realized I was trying to open the wrong mailbox.

So basically life with me is one big brainless party! Come hang out. I'm a lot of fun these days. ;)

Today I'm joining Deidre for my favorite brainchild project: How We Wore It. The inspiration picture is from Elevate Everyday, and I absolutely loved the pale hues combined with the bright cobalt blue. So I went with my white shorts and blue top (one of only two non-maternity tops I can still wear these days).

The scallop hems are fun, and they dress up the top without any extra effort on my part. It's also lightweight and stretchy and great for the warm days ahead (no undershirt required is a huge bonus in this Arizona heat!).

Below, I included the original How We Wore It inspiration picture, as well as a list of everyone else interpreting the same outfit this month. These are some of my favorite ladies, so if you have a minute, check out their gorgeous ensembles. You can sign up for How We Wore It on Deidre's blog by clicking here.

Where do you find your favorite lightweight summer tops?
After the twins come, I'll need some breezy, loose tees!

HOW WE WORE IT // SPRING BRIGHTS

Last week at the grocery store, I got my first, "How much longer till you're due?" question from the cashier.

"About three more months!" I said. "Hopefully three and a half."

Her eyes almost popped out of her head. She could not believe I was this big and had so much longer to go. She didn't calm down until I had explained three times that I was having twins, so I was supposed to look pretty big pretty quick. She asked if I was sure there wasn't triplets, and I assured her that there were only two babies.

(I do have recurring stress dreams about going in for my next ultrasound and discovering a third baby in there, thanks for asking.)

But honestly, I feel the same way as the cashier some days. My 23-week bump is as large as my 35-week bump from my first pregnancy, and I truly do not know how these babies are going to keep getting bigger for three more months. Where will three more months of two babies fit? Will I even be able to walk by the end??

(Although my favorite reaction to date came from a single mom I was talking to a few weeks ago. I told her I was having twins, and she said, "Oh no!" She tried to recover with, "I mean, um, that's so exciting!" Ha! I feel ya, fellow mom.)
A quick break to comfort Claire, who saw a little piece of fuzz and decided it was highly terrifying. Oh to be an almost two-year-old.

The temperatures here in Arizona haven't been too crazy yet (for the most part), so I'm loving being able to roll my pants and grab a light cardigan. I love a good basic maternity tee, and I have this bright pink top in white, black, and grey as well. I have a feeling you'll be seeing a lot more of these in the months to come.

I'm also linking up with my favorite Deidre for How We Wore It today. When I saw this inspiration picture from Chic Street Style, I immediately was drawn to the neon pink. I love how she paired it with more casual jeans and her favorite sunnies for a complete spring look.

See more of my favorites here, or sign up for next month here. Happy Wednesday!

how we wore it // maternity neutrals

The teacher in me will probably always love blazers, and, when it's not too warm outside, I love to pull one out of the back of the closet and wear it. I've been living in light and breezy dresses like this one, and I love that I can pull on a blazer in three seconds, and look like I haven't just been at the playground all day running around after my toddler (which I have).

If you haven't already heard, my girl Deidre is taking over How We Wore It (Deidre, you are amazing. Click here to sign up for next month's fashion collaboration!). Our inspiration this month came from Mint Arrow, and I love the easy, effortless, casual dress look. Add a jacket or blazer for structure, and you are golden.

The inspiration:

My take:
So here's to lots of warm days ahead (and to dropping the blazer when it gets too hot, and still having a put-together look for those 100+ degree days!).

Check out everyone else who participated in this month's fashion collaboration!

HOW WE WORE IT // HOLIDAY PLAID

I would like to congratulate myself for 1) taking these outfit pictures two whole days in advance, which is like a new record for me, and 2) remembering to put on all my accessories. Add the fact that I somehow slept for 10 straight hours on Monday night, and I'm calling this week a win.
In case you're new around here: How We Wore It is a monthly series in which I send out an outfit inspiration, and 25 bloggers recreate the look with whatever they already have in their closet. It's kind of my favorite, and it's also the one time a month I pretend to be a fashion blogger and nobody can tell me no.

This month, our image comes from Because Shanna Said So. I love everything about this look! The second I saw it, I knew I had to use it for this series. The neutrals! The black staple pencil skirt! The plaid scarf! The cardigan!

This is probably the closest I've come to matching the inspiration picture exactly. Except my scarf is about 10 times bigger than hers. And warmer! You guys, this blanket scarf.  It's sooooo soft and warm. I have a feeling I'm going to live in it when we head to snowy Utah for Christmas this year.

And now check out the other amazing bloggers that are doing How We Wore It this month! They are so fantastic, and I'm lucky to count many of these women as my real-life blog friends too.

HOW WE WORE IT // DARKER FALL TONES

Autumn has been a strange thing for me this year. Simply put, I haven't had one. Or I guess, technically, I'm just having a very different fall season here in Arizona. I see pumpkins, sweaters, and fall leaves on Instagram, and I think, "That will be lovely when fall comes to Arizona." But I don't think it will. I think this is it. And surprisingly, I'm really okay with that. We've had lots of warm sidewalk, open windows, cool breeze days lately, and I am perfectly happy to have that weather every day from now until April.

It does make planning my How We Wore It outfits a little harder. I'm always pinning to my secret inspiration board on Pinterest, and then realizing I'm pinning all summer outfits. Sorry in advance if next month's outfit features shorts and a t-shirt! ;)

A quick refresher on How We Wore It: every month, I send the same outfit inspiration to 25 bloggers. Our challenge is to create our own outfit with what's already in our closet, based on the colors, textures, patterns, or pieces in the inspiration. I started this on a whim, but I'm so glad I did, because I look forward to it every month.

This month's inspiration, from StyleLovely:

And my take on it:
^^Believe me, this was the least awkward pose out of about 20 different pictures. What can I say, I'm a natural at bending my limbs weirdly in front of the camera.
^^While Sam was taking these pictures, he said, "You should call this your blog pose." I asked why, and he said, "Literally you never do this in real life. You only do it for the camera." Haha! He's totally right. Henceforth, it shall officially be known as The Blog Pose.

One of my favorite parts of this series is getting to meet other fabulous bloggers. Be sure to check out these ladies' outfits and give them some blog love!

HOW WE WORE IT // FALL TRANSITION

I had the best of intentions not to procrastinate on my pictures this month. At one point last Thursday, I was even in my outfit and ready to go take the pictures. Then something else came up, and then I was busy, and then Sam wasn't here to take my pictures, and then..... etc etc etc.

So I ended up taking these pictures a whole twelve hours ago. Or rather, the lovely Janssen took them for me. One day I'll learn not to procrastinate, but when procrastinating leads you to finally meet one of your favorite bloggers and spend time by a gorgeous lake, how can I not procrastinate, right?

This month's outfit inspiration is from the lovely Emily of Life With Emily.

Out of all my How I Wore It posts, this one is definitely the most different from the original outfit. I saw her orange shirt, and for some reason, all I could think about were my red crop pants. (I don't know, they looked like the same kind of fabric?) So I put on my red crop pants, and thus the outfit was born. I did try to tie it back to Emily with her strappy sandals and matching purse though (Janssen suggested I use her purse instead of mine. It totally matched better so I went for it!).

Here are the other bloggers that joined me in my new favorite series. They are seriously amazing bloggers (and there are a lot of new faces this time!), so go give them some love!

HOW WE WORE IT // SUMMER COOL

A few days ago, my husband and I were cleaning the kitchen together. Okay fine, he was cleaning and I was sitting at the table eating otter pops. (No regrets.) He asked me what was up with the way I had been dressing lately.

"The way I've been dressing lately? What do you mean?"

"Why are you trying to be all business casual every day? You're like always wearing skirts and stuff."

The truth is, I've been wearing a lot of skirts lately. And dresses. I wish I could say that I'm trying to, you know, look nice and stuff. But the truth is way far from that. The real reason I'm wearing skirts and dresses lately is that IT'S JUST TOO HOT TO WEAR PANTS. I just can't. I literally can't even. It's too hot!

So for this month's outfit, I changed the shorts out for a skirt that had the same textured look as Julia's top. (Although her shorts do look pretty breathable and cool. I think if I had shorts like that I'd wear them all the time.) I loved all the neutral colors in this outfit though, and the mix between fancy and laid-back, so I tried to channel that in my take on it.

THE ORIGINAL (via the lovely Gal Meets Glam)

MY INTERPRETATION

^^Necklace c/o Happiness Boutique. I'm generally not a necklace person, but I have to say I love this one. It wasn't too expensive, it's gorgeous, and it automatically makes any outfit that much more classy.
^^A little break to see the cutest fashion accessory around.

You guys, can I just say that I am so much more comfortable behind the camera than in front of it? I think that's why I love this monthly challenge so much. It makes me step outside my comfort zone. Also, I get to pretend like I know anything about fashion once a month, and nobody can stop me! :)

Please please go show some love to all the fabulous ladies who joined me this month! It's so fun to see everyone's different styles and how different all these awesome outfits are even though they came from the same starter picture.

Interested in doing How We Wore It next month?

Here's a little overview: If you sign up, I'll send you an email with an inspiration picture (next month's theme is back to school, and it's probably the easiest outfit I've ever chosen). Then, you use what's already in your closet to showcase your personal take on the outfit. Snap some pictures and then share them all on the same day (the last Wednesday of the month). It's easy and so fun to connect with new people.

I wish I could take everyone, but for now the best way to keep accountability and interaction optimized is to take 20 bloggers a month. So hurry and sign up, or you might have to wait until next month!

HOW WE WORE IT // KEEPIN' IT CASUAL

It's time for How We Wore It! For those of you that are new here, here's a quick little recap of how this series works. Every month, I send out an inspiration photo, and then all the participating bloggers recreate their take on the outfit based on items already in their closet. We all post our outfits and link to each other on the same day. It's fun to see how everyone interpreted the outfit each month.
This series is also a fun challenge for me, since fashion blogging is right up there with hand-eye coordination in my list of Worst Talents Ever. It's good for me to step outside my comfort zone every month as I choose, coordinate, and photograph an outfit. Also, it's proof that sometimes I actually do wear lipstick. Every last Wednesday of the month ;)

This month's inspiration came from the lovely Robyn Vilate. She is gorgeous, and this laid-back, summer casual outfit caught my eye immediately. It's totally something I would wear to a baseball game or on a low-key date with my husband. The problem is that I own exactly ZERO camoflauge items. None. Not even a headband or anything. I almost posed wrapped in my husband's grubby old camo-print beach towel because it's the only camoflauge thing in our whole house (ha! now that would be a fashion statement!). Instead, I opted for a forest-green shirt, my favorite pair of jeans, and a nice summer hat and sandals.

Robyn's original post can be found here
My take:

Check out the other ladies who participated this month. These are some of my favorite bloggers, and every one of their outfits that I've seen so far has been spot on. Seriously, they are killin' it with recreating the outfits this month.

HOW WE WORE IT // SUMMER PLEATS

One of the most vulnerable things I can do as a blogger is start a new series or link-up. It's like, "This is a good idea, right?" "Everyone will love it and participate in it, right?" "But what if nobody likes it?" "What if everyone hates it?" "What if it's a huge flop and not one single soul wants to join me?"

As a blogger, you just have to take those risks. No risk, no reward, right? Sometimes when I try new things on this blog, it's a huge flop (remember my instaLIFE link-up three years ago? Probably not. It was great for a few weeks, but it fizzled out pretty quickly.) But sometimes, when you start a new series even though it's scary and you're afraid nobody will join you, it's a success. I have had so much fun with this monthly How We Wore It fashion collaboration that I don't see myself ever stopping. And people seem to like it! They sign up! More people than I can take want to participate, and it makes my blogger heart happy to see all the excitement about the series. Although I'm still trying to work out the perfect way to include everyone but still keep it a manageable size.

This month's fashion inspiration comes from Mary of Memorandum. I took one look at the pleated skirt and new I had to use this picture.
And here's my take on it! The pleated skirt was a must. I opted to pair it with a softer denim shirt and my favorite nude pumps.

(Another extremely vulnerable thing I can do as a blogger is pose for outfit pictures when I am not a fashion blogger. So basically this entire post is an exercise in embracing the uncomfortable. Somebody sing me Sara Bareilles!)

Pleated skirts are one of the easiest ways I know to make yourself feel instantly feminine and beautiful. Plus, they're light and flowy and perfect for the summer months coming up. I'm slowly building my collection of skirts and shirts that don't require a slip or an undershirt. Accruing wardrobe items that require extra layers underneath just doesn't make sense for the hot Arizona summer I'll be thrown into in just two more months.

Make sure to check out these awesome ladies and how they styled their outfits!
