Silver Lining: Let's get a few things straight about teacher style

Let's get a few things straight about teacher style

Teacher style. Let's take it from the top:

1. Knee-length skirts are cute... for 30 seconds until you bend down to help a student at their desk or sit on the floor for class meeting.

2. Heels? Ha! With all the trips to the copy room, recess duty, and monitoring your class, your feet will beg for mercy by 8am. Or at least my feet do!

3. Cardigans, cardigans, and more cardigans. Once Jason saw my cardigans in my closet and said "how come all teachers wear those?"

4. Orange bus duty vests are sexy.

5. Teacher style can be cute style. Gone are the days of one-size-fits-all denim jumpers and crocheted pumpkin Halloween vests. There are so many cute, fun teachers at my school who have amazing style (Natalie, Mandie, and Ashley, I'm looking at you!). It's also funny and flattering when your students tell you what they like about your outfit. My students especially loved to compliment bright nail polish, colored pants, and fun necklaces last year.

Here are some of my favorite teacher style inspirations this fall. As always, I'm all about primary colors, browns, and muted pinks for my fall teacher style. Replace flats with boots and add cardigans or blazers for the cooler weather, and you're set.

What will your style look like this fall?
Tips on staying cute but professional at the same time?
And how many cardigans of one color is one allowed to own...

  1. I'm all about the midi skirts.
I think they would be perfect for teaching.
whenever I wear one I swear i'm not worried if its windy or anything cause it has the much coverage. love them oh and maxis too.

  2. love your style inspiration
    and you :)

  3. I guess I don't really follow the rules. I wear knee length pencil skirts and heals almost everyday (and I teach kindergarten)

  4. I have a lot of skirts and a lot of layers for shirts--tanktops, cap shirts, low cut (ontop of the previous two), cardigans, sweaters. Oh. I love wearing my heels. I bring a pair of matching flats to change into in the morning before school, prep period, lunch, and after school. The only problem I have is my hair. It is shoulder-length, super curly and super thick and hard to manage. And, I have to leave the house by 6:30 to commute to work. That is my one fail.

  5. AMEN!! I had a colleague who would always show up in high heels... and I mean 5 inch high. How she pulled it off, I have no idea. Leave me to the flats. And the cardis. And occasionally a pencil skirt.

My students always complimented me; it was awkward though, because they are in high school. The best compliment I ever got? (best as in "original/hilarious") "Miss, you're so young and pretty, you could be a pole dancer." I still laugh at that one!

  6. I love cardigans for the workplace! It's perfect! Hope your school year is fabulous just like you!!

  7. Great list for teaching - I love to wear cardigans and am working on owning one in every color possible! Ha!:)

  8. ok first, i love that dress in the top corner. where is it from? and yeah i own a million cardigans. so useful haha i dont think you can ever have too many. i definitely shop with a teacher's eye now so I can start building up my teacher wardrobe

  9. I am on the hunt for the world's comfiest and cutest shoes right now...hard to find! I'm at the point now though that I'm willing to pay for them.

I wear a lot of skinny fit dress pants and solid color (non-jean) skinnies. Lots of cardigans. :)

  10. Awe, thanks Brooke. Though there are 3 of us Ashley's at our school I'm going to hope/pretend you meant me-so don't tell me if you didn't ;). You're quite the stylish teacher your self. My favorite places for cute teacher clothes are Downeast, Banana Republic & the loft (Outlets of course-we are living on teacher salaries).
