Silver Lining: the first trimester

the first trimester

Welcome to my very first post about pregnancy. If you're not into peed-on sticks or nausea, you might want to think about skipping this one ;)

I remember waking up early on the last Monday of October. I knew it was the first day I could take a pregnancy test and receive accurate results, but I could have sworn I wasn't pregnant. I thought "Brooke, just take a stupid test, and then you can stop thinking about it and focus on work today."

Yeah, 5 minutes, 3 squeals, a few happy tears, and 3 pregnancy tests later.... It was a lot of excitement for Monday morning at 5am, let me tell ya!

Somehow I made it through the day without literally bursting from excitement (Breaking News: Teacher Self-Implodes From Pregnancy Excitement During Decimals Lesson). I stopped at Target on my way to get my husband from work and picked up a few baby things and a gift bag. I topped the present off with a handwritten letter to him telling him our big news. We drove to the spot where we got engaged (our gazebo) and I had him read the letter. I loved seeing his reaction. He was so excited! He only made it about halfway through the letter to the part where I started writing in all caps and telling him he was going to be a daddy. There was much hugging and laughing and crying and twirling around and "can you believe we're really going to have a baby??" and totally ignoring all the people jogging on the path next to us who were giving us weird looks. We felt like we had waited so long for this, and we were so so excited.

A lot of people have asked how I'm feeling. I haven't thrown up yet (yay! I'm not a thrower-upper anyway), but food in general makes me super sick. One day I'll post the list of things that have made me gag, because, let me tell ya, it's a doozy. Also, I'm incredibly exhausted all the time. I thought teaching was tiring before I got pregnant! They say most of these symptoms go away at 14 weeks, but here I am, sitting, waiting, wishing.... I can't complain though, and it's all for a good cause :) The excitement weighs out any and all unpleasant symptoms.

I still feel like I'm trying to wrap my head around the fact that I'm going to be a mother (a real live baby! that belongs to me!). We got to listen to our baby's heartbeat a few weeks ago, and honestly, neither of us could think of a better sound that existed in the range of human hearing.

Also, I've eaten about a dozen bags of sour patch kids since I woke up one day and they were the most delicious things on God's green earth. Sour patch kids and all the fruit I can get my hands on. Oh, and string cheese. Mmmmmm :)

  4. A million congrats! I'm glad you haven't thrown up yet, that's a HUGE blessing! I'm due in May, and I didn't start feeling better until about week 16, which I think is normal.... So hang in there, you're almost done with the toughest stuff

  7. Best news ever! Love to you as you finish your school year. I'd give you some great advice but suddenly I can't think of any. You know it anyway! Vitamins, rest, one day at a time, slow down if you can, I know you're doing all of this. Great pictures, you document everything so well, I love it! Love you guys, Mama O.

  10. I missed the first two months of my first trimester, it wasn't until our first scan that that was known though. We got a bit of a shock going for our 12 week scan and being told I was actually 20 weeks pregnant!
I'd love to see that list of foods that have made you queasy! Haha!
    Once again, congratulations!

  14. Congratulations!!!!!! I love that you have a cute way of telling your husband :) And I was the same: sour candy and fruit ALL the time!! The fruit craving got even more intense AFTER having a baby. It's the best. Enjoy everything, especially once you start feeling less like a narcoleptic :) I'm really excited for you! Are you guys going to find out the gender?
