Silver Lining: my students love to give me complisults

my students love to give me complisults

So. Complisults. A compliment you give someone that's actually half an insult. As it turns out, my students are great at them. Like, really great. And they don't even know it, bless their souls.

On the second day of school:
"Mrs. Emery, everyone said you were super strict, but actually, you're really nice!"

Yesterday:
"You actually look really pretty today!"

And today:
"You do a really good job having energy even though you look tired by the time the later gators go home!"

And then you get to say thank you to the student for being so polite and going out of their way to give you a complisult compliment :)

But in all seriousness, I have the most darling kids. They work hard, they're sweet, they make me origami dolls during recess. What more could a teacher ask for?

  3. Hahaha! Well, last year when I finally told my students that I wasn't coming back because I was going to go back to school, one of my super good kids said "I knew you wouldn't last more than a year here! You're too nice" -- uh, so... I'm nice and incapable of teaching in the ghetto. Good one. ;) I also got a lot of "miss, you got swag!" which was a compliment but using "swag" on me sounded like an insult, and then... well, a lot more inappropriate complisults because we're talking about hormonal high school kids in my case.

  6. hahaha! Kids are the best at those! My Mom was a Sunday School teacher, and one time a little girl said to her, "You know, you're so much meaner than the other teachers, I like you."
